Bank Holiday Today answers one question as fast as possible: are banks open today? We cover the United States, the United Kingdom and India, resolving each day against official holiday calendars rather than guesswork.
Methodology
Every answer is computed from machine-readable holiday data that we check against primary sources:
- United States. The Federal Reserve's official K.8 holiday schedule for Reserve Bank and Board closures, cross-checked with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management federal holiday list. Federal holidays move: when one falls on Saturday it is observed on Friday, on Sunday it moves to Monday. Some states add their own observances (where banks stay open); the Federal Reserve's closure date is what decides whether your bank is open.
- United Kingdom. The official GOV.UK bank holiday calendar, split by nation — England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different sets (Scotland skips Easter Monday; Northern Ireland adds St Patrick's Day and Battle of the Boyne). When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, the UK shifts it to a weekday substitute day.
- India. The Reserve Bank of India's holiday matrix, which varies by RBI centre: festival holidays differ between states. Weekend rules are automatic and uniform — all Sundays plus the 2nd and 4th Saturdays are bank holidays; the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays are working days. US-style "observed on Friday/Monday" shifts are never applied to India.
Legal basis
UK bank holidays rest on the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, section 25, which schedules the official bank holidays. US federal holidays follow the Federal Reserve's K.8 schedule; India follows the RBI holiday calendar under the Negotiable Instruments Act framework.
How the checker works
The live checker runs in your browser: it takes today's date, looks up your region's holiday data and applies the weekend rules above. No date is ever baked into the page — the answer is computed fresh on every visit. Future dates are shown from the published calendars; lunar-calendar festivals (such as Eid) can shift by a day with moon sighting and are flagged as provisional.
Disclaimer
Branch status is for reference — confirm with your bank. Individual branches occasionally differ from the national schedule (weather, staffing, local events). Digital banking (UPI/IMPS/NEFT/RTGS), ATMs and card payments work on holidays; branch counters and check clearing do not.
Data updates
Holiday data is re-verified against the primary sources above; the "data last verified" date on every page shows when. Year archives are published once the official calendar for that year is available — which is why, for example, we do not publish an India 2027 archive until the RBI releases the 2027 calendar.
