Are Banks Open Today in India?
Indian banks are open today unless today is a Sunday, a 2nd or 4th Saturday, or an RBI-notified state holiday. The fastest way to know for sure is our India bank holiday checker — pick your state and get a live yes/no answer with the reason.
Three rules cover nearly every closure in India: all Sundays closed, 2nd and 4th Saturdays closed (1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays are working days), and festival holidays that vary by state under the RBI’s holiday matrix.
The three closure rules
Rule one: every Sunday, every bank in India is closed — no exceptions, no state variation. Rule two: the RBI’s Saturday rule — 2nd and 4th Saturdays are holidays, 1st/3rd/5th are working days — in force since September 2015. Rule three: festival and national holidays notified state-wise by each RBI regional office under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
National holidays like Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) close banks everywhere. Everything else — Diwali, Holi, Eid, Pongal, Durga Puja — depends on your state’s RBI centre.
Why your state matters
India doesn’t have one bank holiday list — it has roughly 35, one per RBI regional office. Maharashtra’s list (Mumbai, Nagpur, Belapur centres) differs from Karnataka’s (Bengaluru) or Uttar Pradesh’s (Lucknow, Kanpur). A festival that closes banks in Mumbai may be a working day in Chennai.
That’s why our checker is state-wise: select Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu or any other state or UT and the answer resolves against that state’s RBI centre data.
What works on holidays
Branch counters close; everything else runs. UPI and IMPS work 24×7 including holidays, NEFT and RTGS operate on their holiday schedules, ATMs dispense cash, and card payments are unaffected. Only services needing a branch officer — demand drafts, locker access, KYC updates, cheque-book issuance — wait for the next working day.
One exception worth knowing: on March 31, agency banks stay open for financial year-end work even where a holiday might otherwise apply, per RBI circular.
Planning around Indian bank holidays
Festival-heavy months — March (Holi, Eid), August (Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan), October–November (Dussehra, Diwali) — can stack a festival holiday against a 2nd/4th Saturday and a Sunday into a 3–4 day branch closure. Check the month view on your state’s page before scheduling anything branch-dependent.
